GSTR-2B reconciliation compares the inward-supply records in your books with the ITC statement available on the GST Portal. The objective is not simply to match totals; it is to understand invoice-level differences and decide the correct ITC treatment with evidence.
What GSTR-2B generally contains
According to the GST Portal FAQ, GSTR-2B can include B2B invoices, debit/credit notes reported by suppliers through GSTR-1/IFF/1A and GSTR-5, information from GSTR-6, and eligible import-related information from ICEGATE. Always check current portal guidance for changes.
Data required for reconciliation
- Purchase register
- GSTR-2B download for the return period
- Supplier GSTIN master
- Debit/credit note register
- Import and reverse-charge records, where applicable
- Prior-period unmatched invoice tracker
Step-by-step GSTR-2B reconciliation
- Standardize the data. Clean GSTIN, invoice number, invoice date and tax values.
- Match exact records. Compare supplier GSTIN + invoice number + invoice date + taxable value + tax.
- Classify mismatches. Separate missing in GSTR-2B, missing in books, value mismatch, duplicate, credit-note mismatch and period mismatch.
- Check eligibility. A matched invoice is not automatically eligible ITC; review statutory conditions and restrictions.
- Follow up with suppliers. For missing supplier-reported documents, maintain an ageing/follow-up tracker.
- Record reversals or deferrals. Where required, document the legal basis, period and amount.
- Carry forward unresolved items. Do not discard unmatched invoices at month-end; move them to the next review cycle with ownership and status.
Illustrative mismatch table
| Invoice | Books ITC | GSTR-2B ITC | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| A101 | ₹18,000 | ₹18,000 | Matched – review eligibility |
| A102 | ₹9,000 | ₹0 | Supplier follow-up |
| A103 | ₹0 | ₹4,500 | Check unbooked/incorrect document |
| A104 | ₹7,200 | ₹6,300 | Value/tax mismatch |
Recommended mismatch reasons
- Supplier has not filed or has filed in a different period
- Wrong GSTIN or invoice number
- Invoice value/tax differs between books and portal
- Credit note not booked or not reflected
- Duplicate booking
- Invoice belongs to another registration or location
- ITC restricted or blocked even though the document appears in GSTR-2B
Monthly control checklist
- 100% invoice population reconciled or classified
- Unmatched items assigned to an owner
- Supplier follow-ups documented
- ITC reversals/deferrals supported by workings
- Prior-period mismatches reviewed for resolution
- Final eligible ITC reconciled to GSTR-3B working

FAQs
Does every invoice in GSTR-2B qualify for ITC?
No. Appearance in GSTR-2B does not by itself establish eligibility. Review the applicable legal conditions, documentation and restrictions.
What should I do if an invoice is in books but not in GSTR-2B?
Investigate the supplier filing status, invoice details and period, then document the follow-up and decide the ITC treatment based on current law.
What if GSTR-2B shows an invoice that is not in books?
Check whether the invoice is unbooked, belongs to another GSTIN/location, is duplicated or is otherwise incorrect before taking any credit.
Should unmatched invoices be deleted from the tracker?
No. Carry unresolved items forward with reason, owner, ageing and status until they are resolved or closed with documented treatment.
