How HRA exemption is estimated

The exemption is the lowest of actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of salary, or 40%/50% of salary depending on the eligible city.

Is Hyderabad treated as a metro?

No. For this HRA calculation, only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai use the 50% limit.

Can I claim rent paid to parents?

A genuine, documented arrangement may qualify. Keep a rent agreement, payment trail and appropriate landlord reporting.
