Philippines Loan Interest Guide

A practical guide for understanding the calculation, checking the records and identifying when an illustration needs a fuller review.

Use the Philippines Loan Repayment Calculator alongside this guide. Check the supported inputs before comparing an illustration with a payslip, contribution record or loan disclosure.

Know which interest method you are comparing

A reducing-balance loan charges periodic interest on the outstanding amount under the assumed schedule. An add-on quotation uses a different basis and cannot be entered directly as the annual rate here. Ask the lender for the repayment schedule, nominal rate, fees and effective-interest disclosure. Identical advertised percentages can represent different cash flows.

How this payment formula works

The tool assumes equal payments at the end of each month, a constant nominal annual rate divided by twelve, and a fixed number of monthly payments. With a zero rate, principal is divided equally by the number of payments. For a positive rate, the standard annuity formula is applied. Calculations retain precision internally, so multiplying the displayed rounded payment can differ slightly from the total shown.

Fees and the cash you receive

A fee deducted upfront reduces net proceeds while the financed principal and scheduled payments remain the same in this model. Total financing cost is interest plus that fee. This is not an effective-interest-rate calculation. Ask for the lender disclosure to compare the real cost, including fees and timing, before accepting a quotation.

What is outside the illustration

The estimate excludes variable-rate resets, grace periods, daily accrual, balloon payments, insurance, late charges, early repayment rules and financed fees. It does not model a specific Pag-IBIG housing loan, credit card or government lending product. Do not use a low illustrated payment as proof of affordability: compare the full budget and contractual obligations separately.

Worked example

For ₱100,000 over 12 months at 12% nominal annual reducing-balance interest, the monthly rate is 1% and the estimated payment is ₱8,884.88. Total repayments are approximately ₱106,618.55 before lender rounding. A ₱2,000 deducted fee reduces cash proceeds to ₱98,000 without reducing the financed principal.

A simple review checklist

  • Record the relevant month or calendar year and the source of each amount.
  • Keep employee and employer components, or loan principal and fees, in separate columns.
  • Compare the same calculation basis before treating a difference as an error.
  • Ask the responsible payroll team, institution or adviser to explain unresolved items.

Keep documents in your own secure records. The public calculator does not need an identity number, account number, login, employer name or uploaded payslip. A saved calculation is useful working evidence, but it is not an official assessment, a remittance receipt or confirmation of eligibility.
